Celebrating winter solstice

In celebration of today – winter solstice – I thought I’d share a peaceful image from the December/January 2010 issue of Country Living featuring our Paper Doves. Their use of these simple decorations is so beautiful and creative, bringing life to the paper birds. Makes me wish I had antique bird cages of my own. Even after the holidays, this display would be lovely all winter long.

2009 holiday card contest winner – website submissions

You have truly inspired all of us here with your creativity and craftiness in your submissions to our 2009 Holiday Card Contest! Below you will find some of our customers’ homemade holiday cards that were web submissions, separate from the store submissions (to be featured soon). We’re sure these will make you ooh and ahh, just as they made us!

This year’s website submission winner is MaryDawn from Rockford, Illinois. This stocking card with the adorable face of Demi stole our hearts! We love the Chartreuse Dots lined envelope that coordinates with the hand cut stocking….the complimenting colors…and all the details (tiny punches, rubber stamping, ribbon embellishment, and Joy envelope seal). Needless to say, this holiday card received tons of votes from the employees here.

Tree decorating idea safe for kids & pets

When you have a toddler or puppy in the house, decorating a tree for the holidays is all kinds of fun for little ones, but means constant monitoring for you. Last year Noquet joined our family and now just a year old, she is still all puppy. In decorating our Christmas tree, I wanted to ensure that the ornaments that were at her height were safe for her and not precious to us…in case she got a hold of one!

My solution was to hang paper holiday decorations around the first 3 feet of the tree. I used our Paper Chain Garland Kit and Paper Doves Kit – both festive and safe for kids and pets. I can rest easy now knowing that I won’t come home to broken glass and the fear of what the dog could have eaten!

How-to: origami paper wreath

Here is a fun way to make use of leftover paper, gift wrap scraps or this year’s old calendar pages, while also getting into the holiday spirit – make an origami paper wreath! With just a few folds it’s really simple and fun. Surprisingly sturdy, these wreath decorations are lovely to hang on doors and windows, and miniature versions are great on top of gift packages or hung on the tree. Try using holiday colors for homemade holiday decorations.

Making creative things is my job…and my heart. So to inspire holiday cheer, I made Christmas stockings for each of my department co-workers. Hung from a hutch and flanked by other holiday paper decorations, it’s a treat to walk into our area each day greeted by such a festive scene.

Christmas tree at the Chicago Botanic Garden

This year Paper Source was lucky enough to be asked to decorate a holiday tree for the Chicago Botanic Garden Wonderland Express exhibit. What a great way to kick off the holiday season! The whole experience was a thrill – we entered the gardens through a secret gate in the dark of night. Arriving at the exhibit space, it was abuzz with the decorating process in full swing. My son, Charlie and I felt like we were underground at Disney World – the behind the scenes magic revealed!

It takes just 3 simple steps to make these festive holiday decorations! With this Ball Kraft Ornament they first applied a Colorbox Chalk Inkpad to add color, then used the Platinum Color Box Metal Extra Inkpad on top. Hang them on your tree, decorate a mantle, or use in a centerpiece on your holiday table.

How-to: gingerpaper advent calendar

Advent calendars are so much fun for kids (and adults!) – a festive count down of the days til Christmas. We were so excited to come up with a way to create an advent calendar using our Gingerpaper House Kit, so that kids could actually make their own (yes, with some help from mom or dad)! By adding numbered shingles to the house, you have a way to mark the days – and because the roof opens, parents can hide candy or little gifts inside, as a surprise for each day.
